Windows 3.x Upgrade to PPP instructions

This procedure will install a new login script (login.cmd) so that you can use the PPP protocol to access PubNIX.

This procedure is only necessary if your login name starts with the letter S. If it does NOT, go directly to step 6.

If you don't know what your login name is, you can find out by looking in Trumpet Winsock under Dialler | setup.cmd.

Before you proceed, we recommend that you print out these instructions, then you must notify us so that we can upgrade your account at the same time.

  1. CALLus first at 514-990-5911.
  2. Open your old login.cmd in Notepad.
    • Run Notepad (it is in the Accessories program group)
    • Select File | Open... and browse to the file login.cmd. It should be in C:\pubnix\winsock. Be sure to set the file browser to All files (*.*).
    • Write down the contents of the $modemsetup variable.
    • Exit notepad.
  3. Download the new login.cmd file for Trumpet Winsock

Netscape requires that you hold the SHIFT key while clicking the link to correctly download this file.
Internet Explorer requires that you click the link with the RIGHT mouse button.
    • Save the file on top of the current login.cmd.
    • Use the file browser to find it, usually in C:\pubnix\winsock.
  4. Open the new login.cmd in Notepad, see above for details.
  5. Replace the $modemsetup with the one from the old login.cmd if it differs.
  6. Bring up the Trumpet Winsock screen.
    1. To change the mode of operation from SLIP to PPP...
      • Select File | Setup from the menu bar.
      • Remove the IP address so that the box is left blank.
      • Check the Internal PPP box.
      • Set the MTU value to: 576
      • Set the RWIN value to: 1608 for any machine without a 16550 UART.
      • Set the RWIN value to: 4288 for any machine with a 16550 UART.
      • Set the MSS value to: 536
      • Click Ok.
      • Trumpet Winsock will say that it must be restarted for changes to take effect, but don't exit it just yet!
    2. To update the login information...
      • From the Trumpet Winsock menu bar, select Dialler (yes that is how it appears) then setup.cmd.
      • Click Ok when you are asked for the phone number, as you are not changing this.
      • Enter your new login name, this will be confirmed when you call us, and click Ok.
      • Click Ok when you are asked for the password, as this has not changed.
  7. You can now quit Trumpet Winsock.
  8. Restart Trumpet Winsock and test the new connection.
